Tour Itinerary
Saturday
Saturday you set off for the days riding from Bury St Edmunds and the beautifully manicured Abbey Gardens being sure to take it gentle on the cobbled road of Angel Hill, passing St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which was built in 1503 & only became a cathedral in 1914, before we wind your way out of Bury into the green & pleasant Suffolk countryside.
A lumpy stint is broken up by a visit the Market town of Newmarket, widely renowned as the Home of Horse Racing and you will soon realise that town is built on horse racing, whether it’s the two race courses, fifty plus training stables, 50 miles of training gallops wind around the town and of course, the national horse racing museum. You then take a quick jaunt across the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border to the cathedral city in the Fen’s of Ely, which is actually an island as it is separated in all directions by rivers.
You then head back into Suffolk and zoom towards Lakenheath, which gives you a different kind of attraction, as it’s a significant US military asset and home to the 48th fighter wing with its fast jets and plethora of other aircraft, so you may get your own personal air show!.
Your scenery takes a drastic turn from the open plains of Suffolk agriculture, you head into Thetford Forest riding through the heart of the forest on tree lined roads before reaching the Suffolk/Norfolk border town itself, which was the home of Dads Army and the town & surrounding areas provided a great scenery for the much-loved television show. Your final stage of the day is a short 20k drag back to Bury and the lure of a well-earned drink, rest or enjoy a walk to explore the joys of historic Bury St Edmunds…maybe even visit the smallest pub in Britain, the Nutshell!.
Sunday
You once again set off from Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds with the wonderful backdrop of Abbey Gardens marking our start/finish, but today you head north out of town & have just a mile or so until you reach the outskirts of Bury and the beginning of your adventure through the Suffolk countryside.
Only a handful of miles into your ride we pass West Stow Anglo Saxon Village, a nationally important archaeological site occupied from AD 420 and nowadays a museum of Anglo-Saxon life & then you zoom onward into ‘Kings Forest’ on flat, tree-lined roads. As you reach the village of Elveden, you veer East & skirt around the southern edge of Thetford with forested patches interspersed with agricultural land the combination of which offers varied landscapes to enjoy & savour before you arrive at the award winning and England’s oldest Whisky distillery, aptly named The English Whisky Company where you stop for lunch.
After lunch head south traversing market towns, villages & hamlets on-route back towards Bury St Edmunds. There are plenty of open roads to enjoy, if the wind is up then you will know about it as there is nowhere to hide…aside from in someone else slipstream, but the open plains offer endless landscapes so best to give yourself some room to gaze into the distance & drink up the scenery. Finally, you approach Bury from the East giving you a full picture of Bury in every direction across the weekend and after a short drag uphill you reach our finishing line on Angel Hill & step off the bike after a memorable, fun weekend with miles making smiles!.
